We sew lush dresses for girls with your own hands

Something magical happens when you sew a lovely, flowing dress by hand for a young child. Sewing a luxurious dress lets you put love and creativity into each stitch, whether it’s for a special occasion, an enjoyable party, or just because.

Choosing the fabric, colors, and style that best fit your child is another benefit of making your own dress. It’s not only about following a pattern; it’s also about realizing your vision and creating something distinctive that she will adore spinning around in.

We’ll walk you through the entire process of sewing a gorgeous dress for a girl in this article. If you’ve never sewn before, don’t worry—this project is made to be enjoyable and doable, even for total novices. Now let’s get to work making a dress that is just as unique as the girl who will be wearing it!

Step Description
1. Choose Fabric Select a soft, flowy fabric like tulle or cotton. Make sure it is comfortable for the child to wear.
2. Take Measurements Measure the child"s chest, waist, and desired dress length. This ensures a perfect fit.
3. Cut Fabric Cut the fabric according to the measurements. Cut a skirt piece and a bodice piece separately.
4. Sew Bodice Sew the bodice pieces together, leaving space for the zipper or buttons at the back.
5. Gather Skirt Gather the top edge of the skirt to create fullness. Attach it to the bottom of the bodice.
6. Attach Fasteners Sew a zipper or buttons on the back to close the dress securely.
7. Add Finishing Touches Hem the skirt, add embellishments like ribbons or lace, and check the fit on the child.

DIY children"s dress: master class

Stage one

Let’s start with the cut. We suggest ending the dress a little higher on the waist for a one-year-old girl instead of at the waist. We construct a length of eighteen centimeters, front and back widths of twenty-seven centimeters each, and shoulder widths of six centimeters, accounting for seam allowances. We advise completing the armhole to a height of nine centimeters, or half that.

Next, trim the tulle length into 50 centimeter strips.

As we will be laying folds, spaced six centimeters apart, make the skirt lining 12 centimeters wider than the shelf and back.

We will be lacing this piece by basting two loops on each side, along the bottom of the blanks and in the center. You can use it to change how the dress fits around the waist.

Then, we fold the back blanks with their right sides inside and stitch them together along the central seam using satin and cotton fabric. Invert the position. The lace blank is placed on the right side of the satin blank, and the edge is stitched.

The shoulder and side seams on the cotton fabric and the satin + lace sections are connected individually. The seams are ironed.

Stage two

The future dress’s top is turned inside out, revealing the cotton fabric and lace on the right side. Using a sewing machine, we stitch all three layers along the front neckline. A little earlier, we connected the back already. We stitch in the same direction along the armhole.

For those who are new to sewing and fear becoming lost in the layers, go for the easier option of using bias tape to edge all the layers together.

From two blanks, a petticoat will be sewed. Form a straight line by overlocking their sides together. Make a straight line by turning the bottom edge, ironing it, and tucking it in again.

Sew together two tulle blanks. This will yield two circles of tulle that are very shape-holding and two additional circles of tulle that are softer. We use the longest stitches we can manage to create a line along the top, then tighten the thread to bring the bottom and top together.

We sew the cotton petticoat face up from cotton and the tulle face up from lace and satin to conceal all the seams. What we receive is as follows:

After sewing the layers together, create a droplet in the middle of the back of the skirt. Turn the skirt inside out, tucking the cotton and tulle front sides inside and sewing them together along the edges. A tulle dress for a girl is ready when the lacing is pulled in!

How to sew a fluffy dress for a girl with your own hands

We will require the following equipment and supplies for our work:

As an oversized tutu skirt

  • pale pink tulle – 4 meters;
  • sharp scissors;
  • elastic tape 2 cm wide and the length equal to the child"s waist minus 3 cm;
  • 50 centimeters of white guipure with a floral pattern (enough for both the bodice and the skirt);
  • elastic tape 2 cm wide and the length equal to the child"s waist minus 3 cm;
  • lilac satin ribbon – 1 meter;
  • pink satin ribbon – 2 meters;
  • cuts of green satin ribbon;
  • pink threads;
  • needle;
  • candle.
  • for the headband
  • stretch lace;

Sizes 92 and up will fit the dress nicely. For convenience of dressing, the bodice and skirt in our case are sewn separately; however, they can be joined during the work to form a single dress.

How to sew a children"s dress: a step-by-step master class

Using sharp scissors, first cut the tulle into rectangles that are 30 centimeters long and 20 centimeters wide. Cutting each one of them separately is not required; instead, fold the fabric multiple times and cut the pack at once.

The elastic band should then be attached to any surface, like the back of a chair. Tie two knots to secure the tulle pieces to the band. Tie the elastic band all the way around. Use sharp scissors to trim the tulle ends so the skirt looks nice. It should only take 30 minutes at most!

Tatyanka skirt

We use guipure for the Tatyanka skirt; one piece measuring 100 by 15 centimeters is needed. Sew along the short edges to create a 15 x 50 double rectangle. Hem it by 3 cm along the 30 cm side, then sew. Our skirt is now 12 centimeters long (you must leave a tiny hole to thread the elastic through). Using the same length as the tutu skirt, take an elastic band. Sew the edges and thread it with elastic. At our discretion, we trim the skirt’s lower edge.

Dress bodice

We sew the bodice from the same guipure. To avoid constructing a pattern, use a child"s T-shirt or T-shirt: lay it out on a Whatman paper, smoothing out all the folds, and trace along the contour. Correct the pattern by slightly increasing the measurements to make the finished product easier to put on, since the guipure does not stretch. Next, stepping back from the solid lines, draw dotted lines for the seam allowances. To make the top look a little more elegant, add cap sleeves. To do this, you need to cut out small strips along an oblique line, round the edges, overcast with a zigzag, gather a little and sew the details to the bodice piping.

You can secure the dress along the back with buttons and hinged loops to make it more comfortable to wear. The bodice’s neckline is sewn with an open-cut hem seam.

Belt with roses made of satin ribbons

Belt

We’ll use a 100×8 cm piece of guipure for the belt. It measures 100 by 4 cm when folded in half along the long side. Iron it, then sew along two of the short and one of the long sides.

Lilac rose

Three lilac and two pink roses, three lilac buds, and three leaves will be made to embellish the belt.

You will need to cut out 11 petals total, plus 3 petals for the bud, to make a rose. Cut a length of tape measuring 100 centimeters into 14 equal pieces. Cut out one circle from every piece. Carefully singe the petal edges after lighting a candle.

We then get to work assembling. Sew the bottom of one circle after rolling it into a tube. Join the second circle to the first petal by folding it in half lengthwise. Repeat steps three and four. The remaining circles can be sewn on, but glueing them on will look much nicer.

Sew the final three circles after twisting them individually.

Our method for creating pink roses is the same.

Greenery

Using a green satin ribbon, cut out three squares. Sever the ends over a candle and glue them diagonally to form a triangle.

Apply glue to the "butt" of the rose and place it on the triangle; repeat with the other two. Consequently, we’ll get three buds.

Using the same ribbon, cut out three leaf shapes and singe them over a candle.

Assembling the belt

After determining the belt’s center, adhere a lilac rose to the spot, position pink roses to its left and right, and then add buds and leaves.

Headband

Make your little girl a gorgeous flower headband to go with her dressy outfit! Measure the circumference of the girl’s head and deduct 1 centimeter for the headband made of wide stretch lace. Sew a strip of lace along the short sides after cutting it out. Create a second rose (just like the belt), add three leaves and a single bud, and then sew or glue them to the lace braid. And with that, the headband is prepared!

You might be surprised to learn how simple it is to make gorgeous, voluminous dresses for girls at home. Your creativity, along with a few basic sewing skills and some carefully selected fabric, will allow you to design and sew a dress that’s ideal for any special occasion. This tutorial will lead you through the process of creating a gorgeous, fluffy dress, providing advice on how to choose fabrics, patterns, and stitching methods to realize your idea.

Dress with a lush tulle skirt and a lace bodice with an open back: video mk

Elegant dress with a lush tulle with a skirt and a cutout on the back

The ideal choice for any holiday are children’s marshmallow-style dresses made of fluffy tulle! It won’t be hard to sew a dress using our tutorial; all you’ll need is some basic sewing knowledge and a full-size printout of the top pattern. Trace your daughter’s well-organized blouse on paper to make things even easier for yourself. Manually sketch and cut out a heart on the back piece. That’s it; the pattern for the kids’ dresses is prepared. The paper pattern only needs to be transferred to the fabric, seam allowances added, and cutting out;)

We will require the following equipment and supplies for our work:

  • 50 cm of satin;
  • 50 cm of cotton fabric for the lining;
  • 1 m of tulle to match the fabric for the skirt;
  • lace for the top;
  • hidden zipper;
  • threads;
  • pins;
  • sharp scissors;
  • pencil or chalk;
  • beads and seed beads for decorating the finished product.

Sewing elegant dresses: master class

Stage one

As we already have a pattern for a girl’s fluffy dress, we just cut out the foundation and lining. This can be completed individually or "sandwiched" by assembling all the layers, pinning them, and then cutting them out all at once (shiny and lace can crumble, so you’ll need really sharp scissors in this situation).

Our dress’s bodice detail is made up of four layers of tulle, a base, a lining, and lace. In this instance, the number of tulle layers is a result of our wish to brighten the dress and match the top and bottom colors. We will also use four layers of fine "mesh" on the skirt.

Cut out the cotton lining layer once all the layers have been cut out. Four layers of tulle and lace are placed on the base fabric (satin) from the front, secured with pins, and machine-stitched over the allowance. This is how it ought to appear:

Step two

We will work on the lining next.

Fold the back piece in half and cut out a heart while the top blanks are not sewn along the side and shoulder cuts. Remember to account for the indent from the skirt and neckline, as well as to leave space at the top and bottom for allowances! Next, sew the side and shoulder seams, and join the top and lining skirt. Make sure to try on the blank at this point!

The left side cut is left unsewn, and this is where the hidden zipper will eventually be placed.

Examine the product’s fit closely during the fitting! In our instance, the neckline was trimmed and the armhole was widened.

Next, sew the lining along the neckline to the front portion of the bodice. Fold the lining inside out and topstitch it down by 1-2 mm.

At this point, our dress looks like this:

Stage three

The armhole is about to happen.

This is the time to add any extra decorations, such as wings, sleeves, or ribbons, if you intend to add any. Before beginning to attach the face and lining fabric, sew them to the front side of the bodice.

We provide two methods for achieving this below.

The first option is to fold the lining and front portion inward by the allowance width. Next, sew the pieces together along the armhole using a sewing machine or by hand using a blind stitch. This technique is easy to use and quick enough for novice artisans.

Option two: as seen in the picture below.

Thus, begin by folding the face over the shoulders and armhole.

Next, stitch as far as the machine will allow you to (roughly halfway down the armhole) using a machine stitch.

Execute a fastening, remove the piece, and re-pin the machine-unsewn portion.

The hardest part is now to carefully connect the remaining layers, being careful to prevent the machine from chewing them (hold the layers and gently stretch them to avoid this).

Stage four

All that’s left to do is basically process and assemble: we use an overlocker to finish all of the raw cuts on the skirt along the lining and on the front side, and we also start putting the tulle front skirt together.

To achieve the fullest skirt starting at the waist, gather the layers of tulle separately.

In the end, we will receive this. Pull the thread a little bit to gather the skirt until the top meets the bodice’s bottom (the point where the skirt is sewn to the top).

Every layer four:

Attach the gathered tulle layers to each other with a second line, and then attach the completed tulle skirt to the satin foundation.

Sew the tulle skirt and front top together, folding the front sides inward. Zipper should be sewn in along side cut.

Step five

Let’s now work on the back piece’s heart. In the same manner as the armholes, sew the front fabric and lining together along the neckline. Make notches, topstitch along the lining, and sew with a connecting seam.

Sew a button and a bow on.

Adorn the shoulders with wings. In order to accomplish this, we must fold the tulle into multiple layers, cut out circles from it, fold them in half twice, and sew two of these pieces to each side.

We use seed beads and beads to adorn the center of the wings. In this manner, we also close the stitches that were used to sew them and fix the twists.

After that, we stitch and fold the skirt’s bottom.

Girls’ fluffy dresses can also have front decorations, like a belt or detachable collar.

That’s it; the outfit is prepared!

Making a lovely, fluffy dress for a young child is a fulfilling project that combines imagination and usefulness. Anyone can sew a dress that will make a little girl feel special and unique if they have a little perseverance and attention to detail.

It’s an easy process that can be customized to your tastes, starting with choosing the appropriate fabric and ending with learning the fundamentals of sewing. Whether you choose bold hues, whimsical designs, or delicate trimmings, your unique style will be evident in the finished item.

Above all, there is nothing quite like the satisfaction of creating something by hand, especially for a special someone. Along with improving your sewing abilities, this project will make cherished memories for the young girl who will wear the dress with pride and for you as well.
