How to embroider flowers on clothes?

It’s harder to embroider flowers on clothing than on canvas. You need to consider the fabric’s elasticity, transparency, and thickness.

Suggestions. Interlining is bonded to the fabric in order to give the embroidery on clothing a polished and appealing appearance. Use a material that dissolves in water for transparent fabrics.

Prior to considering embroidery as a means of concealing a hole, the flaw must be fixed. You can carefully darn the product or sew on a patch.

Typically, decorative embroidery is positioned:

  • along the top line of pockets;
  • on collars;
  • on cuffs;
  • along the bottom of trousers;
  • on one or both sides of the yoke;
  • in the front of the T-shirt 5-10 cm below the neckline;
  • on the left chest;
  • at the back of the shirt, T-shirt at shoulder blade level.

Required materials

The following supplies are required as a minimum to embroider flowers on clothing:

  • Threads. Beginning needlewomen should use cotton floss threads. They are easy to embroider, they are docile, and have a rich palette of colors.
  • Needle. For embroidery, you need a needle with a large eye (40% larger than the diameter of the thread).
  • Hoop. Helps keep fabric taut. With them the embroidery turns out neat and even.
  • Additionally: scissors, a simple pencil or fabric marker, carbon paper, drawing templates.

Step-by-step instructions

Clothes must be cleaned and ironed before being embroidered. Next steps to take:

  1. Transfer the design to clothing. Simple flowers can be drawn by hand with a simple pencil, a special marker or a piece of soap.
  2. To transfer detailed colors, use tracing paper and a printed template. You need to pin tracing paper with a pattern to your clothes and draw along the main lines with a non-sharp pencil.
  3. Cut a thread 60 cm long and thread it into a needle.
  4. Hoop an area on clothing.
  5. Start embroidering from the front side from the corner of the design. Do not tie a knot, but make 1-2 small stitches. Subsequently, the tail of the thread will hide under the embroidery.
  6. Embroider a flower along the marked lines using the chosen method.

Suggestions. Three threads can be used for embroidery on thick materials like denim. The flower will have more volume and be rougher. Use one thread for neat, fluid embroidery.

Flower No. 1 – Simple Rose

Two floss spools are required: one green and one of any other color (pink, purple, red, yellow, etc.). How to swiftly and simply sew roses onto clothing:

  1. Draw something like a stick star on the fabric.
  2. Embroider in green, as shown in the photo:
  3. Thread the second thread into the needle. Bring to the center of the flower.
  4. Thread the needle through the stitch like a loop. Skip the second stitch. Thread through the third stitch, then into the fifth. Pull up the thread.
  5. Repeat the winding, this time threading the needle through the 2nd and 4th stitches. Thus fill the entire space. With each circle you need to tighten the thread less and less.

Flowers No. 2 – Field daisies

You must be proficient in two stitches in order to embroider daisies on clothing:

  • loop with attachment;
  • French knot.

Detailed instructions:

  1. Draw the outline of the daisy.
  2. Embroider the petals with white thread. Bring the needle to the center of the flower. Place the thread in a loop. Insert the needle next to the place where the thread comes out and direct it to the top of the loop. You need to bring the needle out before the thread. Make a small stitch (attachment) that will fix the loop. Thus, embroider 7-9 petals or more.
  3. Embroider the yellow center. Bring the needle with the thread in the center. Win the thread on the needle 1-3 times. Insert it next to the place where it comes out and smoothly tighten the French knot. Embroider 5-7 knots.

Flower No. 3 – Calendula

You will need orange, green, and yellow floss threads for your work. How to lace calendulas by hand:

  1. Apply the pattern shown in the photo to the clothes:
  2. Thread a green thread into the needle.
  3. Embroider a plant stem using a stem stitch. For those who are not familiar with it, we suggest looking at the diagram. It"s very simple:
  4. Then embroider two leaves using the “loop stitch” method.
  5. Using the same method, but using orange thread, embroider flower petals, as shown in the photo:
  6. Embroider the inner circle along the edge with a French knot.
  7. Embroider three French knots in the middle with yellow thread.
  8. Decorate the outer circle with short yellow stitches.

Flower No. 4 – Rococo Rose

The second easy rose embroidery method. We recommend using a gorgeous peach-colored thread, though you can use multiple shades.

What you should do in stages:

  1. Mark the location of the flower with a small circle. Mark its center with a second circle.
  2. Bring the needle and thread from the inside into the small circle.
  3. Next to the place where the thread comes out, hook 2-3 mm of fabric with the needle. Without pulling the needle out of the fabric, wind the thread around the point. You need to make 12 turns. Holding the resulting tube with your free hand, smoothly pull out the needle and tighten.
  4. Make a fastener so that the tube lies on the fabric.
  5. Bring the needle to the front side next to the embroidered element. Make a puncture on the opposite side. Without pulling out the needle, make 12 more turns with the thread, form a tube, and fasten.
  6. Embroider 6-8 petals in this way, moving in a spiral from the central circle to the outer contour.
  7. If desired, embroider two more roses and green leaves nearby (using the loop and fasten method).

Flower No. 5 – Daisy

Use three different colored floss threads to embroider the flower: green, white, and crimson. How to stitch a daisy step-by-step onto clothing:

  1. Redraw the daisy pattern with a pencil or marker:
  2. Start filling in the green part of the plant: embroider the stem with a stem stitch, then the outline leaf, and its middle. On the left side, for the green part of the bud, we use a loop stitch with an attachment.
  3. Now we use a raspberry thread. Along the outer circle of the daisy, we will embroider loops with a gap of 0.5 cm. Attention to the photo:

Simple stitches (satin stitch) should be used to fill in the bud’s space.

  1. Change the pink thread to white. Bring the needle to the front side in the contour of the inner circle, thread it through the pink loop and return back. You get a white petal. In the same way, we embroider all the petals.
  2. At the end, we make a French knot with a raspberry thread in the center of the daisy.

Useful tips

There are various techniques for clothing embroidery. You could, for instance, embroider flowers onto felt. This is useful and convenient at the same time. Felt embroidery can be worn as a brooch or as a patch, among other things.

Several helpful pointers:

  • It is important to make small and even stitches about 5 mm long.
  • The most beautiful works are obtained with the embroidery method gradient. Flowers look three-dimensional and natural, as if they were alive.
  • To embroider flowers with a gradient, draw color spots on the sketch. Use matching shades of floss. Embroidery pattern:
  • It is most convenient to apply a pattern to fabric, especially a detailed one, with a marker. Sewing stores sell special markers that disappear on their own or after washing.
  • If artistic embroidery is not your thing, you can make the pattern attractive by embroidering individual elements with shiny metallic thread.
  • Metallic thread tends to fluff, split and tie into knots. It is better to use such floss in short pieces.
  • The easiest way to make embroidery voluminous is to use the satin stitch technique with a layer. First, you need to embroider the element with dense stitches, and then cover it with a second layer of transverse stitches. Pattern:
