What to sew from
A doll skirt can be made from a wide range of materials. You can use knitted fabric, leather, synthetic, and natural materials. Kids’ socks can also be used to sew an elegant ensemble. Additionally, this is typically a treasure if mom has done some sewing in the past and has various scraps. You can create countless styles by combining different fabrics. We use ribbons, lace, beads, seed beads, and anything else your imagination can come up with to adorn skirts!

How to sew a skirt for a doll without a pattern
We must get ready:
- fabric – a rectangle 11.5 cm by 19.5 cm. If desired, you can sew a skirt from two types of fabric, then divide the total size into the required parts;
- elastic band, width 5 mm – 10 cm;
- threads, sewing tool.
Description – how to sew a skirt
Let’s look at using two different kinds of fabric to make a skirt.
Stitch the fabric strips together by folding their right sides together. Either hand stitching or machine stitching can be used for the stitching. Use an overlock or a zigzag stitch to overcast the allowances’ edges.
Press the joint. Cover the top and bottom edges. Sew after folding the lower edge.
Retrace 15 mm from the top edge and sew, stretching the elastic.
Initially, the seam is made in the direction that aligns with the elastic tension.
Next, we draw a line going the other way.
To ensure that the fabric is gathered all the way around, it is crucial to stretch the elastic evenly.
We pull up the top edge so that it covers the elastic. We sew, creating a belt.
The picture below shows how the doll skirt looks on the front at this point.
And a view from the back in the following picture.
The skirt is folded in half, wrong side out, and the cuts are sewn shut using basting or pins.
Our stitching is done 15 mm away from the edge.
We iron the seam and overcast the cuts. The skirt is prepared!
Basic pattern of a straight skirt for a new model Barbie
You can model different types of skirts for your favorite doll using this pattern.
Straight skirt with a blind slit
You will need to cut out two halves of the back panel and one piece with a fold for the front panel on such a model. You will also need to cut out the belt’s strip.
Straight skirt with a slit
You will also need to cut out two halves of the back panel and one piece with a fold for the front panel on such a model. You will also have to cut out a strip for the belt.
Flared skirt
The front panel of this model is constructed as a single piece, while the rear panel is divided into two sections. A fastener is located in the middle of the back panel.

Skirts for a Monster High doll
Lush skirt with a bow
This model requires the following:
- fabric;
- beads of two colors for decoration;
- mouline threads;
- wide elastic band;
- threads, sewing tool.
Description
Cut out the panel and bow details based on the suggested pattern.
Sew the skirt on the seam on one side. Use an overlock to finish the side seam cuts and the top and bottom edges. Stitch after turning the hem’s bottom edge.
Stitch the elastic to the panel’s upper edge after stretching it. Stitch the second side seam after folding the right side inside out.
Stitch along three sides of the long edge of the blank to make the bow, then turn it inside out. The fourth side’s allowances are tucked inward, and we stitch. Hand stitch the bow into place – see photo.
Two-layer mini skirt
To assemble it, you’ll need:
- fabric for the skirt – satin, silk will do;
- fabric for the petticoat – guipure, lace, mesh will do;
- narrow Velcro tape, a small piece;
- contrasting threads for topstitching and threads in the color of the fabric.
How to do it
Cut a strip of fabric for the top layer, leaving a margin to allow for the creation of frills. Cut a longer piece for the bottom layer. Additionally, we must cut out a belt—a strip the required length. We measure the volume of the doll’s hips to determine the length of the belt piece because this model has a low rise.
We use an overlock to finish all of the component edges (petticoat excluded). The panel’s lower edge is folded, and it is stitched using contrasting threads. We use contrasting threads to fold and stitch the belt’s upper edge. The top and lower skirts are gathered and sewed to the belt with basting. We use an overlock to process the cuts. Use contrasting thread to sew the components to the belt. Attach the Velcro tape by sewing it to the matching sides of the seam.
Even novice sewers with rudimentary sewing abilities can complete this easy and imaginative project by hand: making a doll’s skirt. You can easily make a custom skirt that fits your desired style, whether it’s elegant, playful, or somewhere in between, by following a few simple steps. You can easily realize your ideas with the help of this article, which will walk you through every step of the process—from selecting the appropriate fabric and cutting the pattern to sewing and adding any finishing touches.

Straight skirt
If using elastic fabric, the back panel of the skirt can be cut out in one piece.
It is preferable to construct the back panel in two parts if the fabric is not pliable. You can use hooks or Velcro tape as the fastener.
Skirt for a Japanese school uniform
To sew, you’ll need:
- fabric: crepe – satin or satin of blue color;
- white tape – 3 mm wide;
- buttons;
- threads to match the fabric color, sewing tool.
Description
Cut two 7 by 10 cm and 7 by 25 cm rectangular pieces.
When it comes to processing the edges for this master class, if the fabric is not "loose," there is no need to overcast the edges. Instead, overlock the bottom edge of the larger piece, fold it, and sew it.
Stitch on a white ribbon 3–5 mm in from the edge. We sew, fold, and overcast the side cuts.
We overcast the side cuts, fold, and stitch the second piece.
The skirt should be folded with the right sides facing each other. Using even folds, attach the panel to the belt with glue. Sew the seam five millimeters in from the edge.
Either use a hand or machine stitch to sew.
Bent the cuts of the belt inward and fold it to the wrong side. Secure with a basting stitch. Restitute the belt by closing the stitching seam slits.
After making a machine stitch, cut the basting stitch threads.
On the incorrect side, sew vertically, leaving a gap.
Skirt for a Bigfoot Doll
In order to create a skirt, you must first:
- thin denim;
- threads, sewing tool.
Description
Calculate the skirt panel’s width and length while accounting for the folds. Make a mark on the double-layered fabric.
We cut the belt and panel blanks. Keep in mind to account for seam allowances.
Sew side seams, leaving 2 to 2.5 cm of open space along left seam at top. We use overlock to process every cut.
Stitch along the front side and fold one hem along the bottom edge.
Next, we’ll talk about making a skirt that is removable and non-removable.
Non-removable skirt
Top edge turned; secure with basting stitch.
Mark the locations of the side seams and the centers of the front and back panels. After that, I sew by placing the skirt on the doll and fixing the top edge’s four points after making the necessary markings. Next, I arrange the folds on the doll and secure them with pins or stitches. It is possible to fold on one side and the opposing side.
Removable skirt
Arrange the folds and secure them using a basting stitch. After folding the belt and the skirt’s main portion right sides together, secure them with a basting stitch. Stitch the belt 5 to 7 mm in from the edges. Beginning at the open portion of the side seam and moving backwards 7–10 mm, we begin sewing; however, we stop short of reaching the other side by 12–15 mm.
Stitch along the width after folding the belt in half with the right side facing inside. Turn the belt inside out and cut out the corner allowances. Make the part straight. Make a basting seam first, then use a machine to sew the stitching seam closed. The stitching seam should be followed by the line. Put some iron on the belt.
