Where does this name come from

One version claims that the fabric got its name from the Barbie doll, which has stood for elegance and beauty for many generations. The first doll manufactured by Mattel and released in 1959 had clothing made of elastic, break-resistant synthetic material.

There are other names for this issue, though. It is also referred to as "costume" or "marchiano" in the textile industry.

The meaning of the word "marciano" could not be fully ascertained. Maybe this is the last name of a real person involved in the creation and design of textiles in any way. Like "Barbie," "marchiano" only has one obvious meaning: it’s the name of a well-liked costume fabric made of polyester, viscose, and elast.

Description, properties, composition and types

Either all synthetic materials or a blend of synthetic and natural fibers are used to make Barbies. Be a part of the costume and dress group. It is mostly used to sew clothing, mostly for women.

Barbie is characterized as a smooth, dense, soft canvas with the same thread structure on both sides in textile catalogs.

One kind of Barbie called "Creed Barbie" or "Costume" has characteristics and an appearance similar to costume strength fabric. However, because Barbie is made with even, smooth threads rather than twisted ones, the velvety matte surface of the fabric appears more delicately textured. It does, however, stretch well, be fairly dense, and be strong.

Another characteristic of this material is that clothing composed of elastic material conceals extra volume. Many women have fantasies of looking amazing and having a well-fitting dress or suit.

Composition

The fabric can be blended or synthetic based on composition.

The most common composition of synthetic materials is 95% polyester (PE), which is derived from refined oil and gas products, and 5% spandex or elastane. This fiber is also synthetic, and in order to enhance its qualities at the output, it is typically blended with fabrics that are both synthetic and natural in origin. The proportion of these fibers might differ between producers.

Blended composition: a blend of synthetic fibers (55% polyester, 5% lycra) and up to 40% viscose or cotton. We can use "light" and the Barbie costume as examples. Cotton and viscose fibers give the material a "breathable" quality that enhances wearer comfort. It is more expensive and has a higher value than synthetic.

Types of fabric

Barbie’s performance characteristics are contingent upon the composition of the fabric and the ratio of natural to synthetic fibers.

  • Barbie (classic version). This is 100% synthetic made of polyester, spandex or elastane fibers. This composition and synthetic base make the fabric dense, durable, elastic.
  • Barbie crepe (costume version of barbie) consists of 50-60% polyester, 3% elastane, 37-47% viscose. Viscose contained in its structure improves the material"s resistance to temperature changes, fading, increases air permeability. The clothes fit perfectly on the figure, do not deform during care and wear, retain color and shape well.
  • Barbie light is a “breathable”, lightweight material made of cotton and elastane with good hygienic characteristics. This is a light version of the classic Barbie. It is used to sew summer clothes for offices, light beautiful outfits for celebrations. Its drawback – it is more severe than other species.
  • Barbie Streich is an elastic fabric that contains spandex fibers in large numbers. The material stretches well, but does not stretch, does not deform, does not break.

All varieties of this stylish costume-plane fabric have an elasticity indicator that is high enough. Cotton blended with elastan and polyester is resistant to pollution, plastic, and obedient; viscose and polyester together make it more resilient, soft, and hygroscopic.

Arrangement based on appearance

  • The monophonic or smooth -colored Barbie fabric of any color: from bright saturated tones to gentle pastel shades. The canvas is easily stained, it does not fade for a long time with proper care.
  • Printed or stuffed fabric with drawings and ornaments applied to a finished canvas, painted in any color. This method is often used in the production of materials from which home textiles and elegant dresses are sewn.
  • Double-sided – each side of the fabric, which has no face and back, can be painted in the same color or different. From double-sided "Barbie" you can get interesting models of women"s clothing, in which one side serves as the face of the product, and the second color is used as a decorative element.

Characteristics and properties

The primary markers of Barbie fabric are:

  • structure – porous, crepe;
  • surface – slightly rough, matte, soft to the touch, does not irritate the skin, does not prick;
  • density – medium-density material: from 190 to 330 g / m²;
  • opaque (the fabric is not translucent);
  • does not wrinkle, when compressed, creases do not form on the fabric;
  • elastic and plastic;
  • wear resistance – high (can serve for years with proper care);
  • air permeability – low;
  • strength – high;
  • not afraid of moisture – low hygroscopicity;
  • does not fade, is not afraid of sunlight;
  • does not roll;
  • stretches well, but does not stretch or deform when worn;
  • durable dyeing (paints do not fade in the sun, do not fade when washed);
  • variety of colors, shades and patterns on the fabric;
  • quality – high;
  • cost – low.

The quality and features of domestic fabric are comparable to those of foreign counterparts made in Asia and Europe.

What is sewn from Barbie

This fabric is perfect for sewing women’s clothing because it is classified as a dress material. You can sew garments of various models and styles thanks to its high strength, resistance to wrinkles, and capacity to create flowing silhouettes and drapes. Home textiles are sewn with attributes like good wear resistance and lack of creases.

Blouses, elegant light dresses with frills and folds, sun skirts, evening and casual ensembles, and summer office models are all made from perfectly draped, soft, elastic "light" fabric. Practical and stylish "costume" fabric is used to make business and elegant suits, pants, jackets, skirts, school uniforms, and special clothing for employees of organizations and enterprises.

It’s important to know what you plan to use fabric or ready-made clothing for.

Wearing clothing composed of blended fabric with natural additives is a comfortable way to work and relax during the day. Double-sided or printed Barbie material with cotton or viscose content works well for summer dresses, skirts, and jackets.

You can wear synthetics for a business suit or trench coat. Even so, everyday wear items made of it are not particularly comfortable. On the other hand, it works well for sewing an amazing dress for a unique occasion.

Barbie stretch is a better option if you want the item to fit your body perfectly. This is where the rule comes into play: the fabric should be thinner the more intricately cut the future model will be.

In passing, customers frequently inquire as to whether or not Barbie fabric stretches. Indeed, the material stretches, and it has nearly the same elasticity as knitwear. Nevertheless, when worn, it deforms less.

Advantages and disadvantages

Given that Barbie fabric can be made entirely of synthetic fibers or with natural fibers added, let’s examine the benefits and drawbacks of each type.

Among the benefits of being entirely synthetic are the following characteristics:

  • the strength of the material to mechanical damage;
  • resistance to change in shape and structure during frequent washes and intensive socks;
  • incomplete;
  • Small jams can be removed by ironing with an iron at low temperature;
  • does not miss moisture;
  • When cutting, the material does not slip, lies evenly, the edges do not crumble at the cut place;
  • beautifully and easily drape;
  • stretches well, but clothes are not stretched on the knees, elbows and other protruding parts of the body.

Drawbacks:

  • loses strength, burns out in the sun;
  • poorly passes the air, "does not breathe", does not absorb moisture;
  • quickly absorbs smells, which you can get rid of, only work of clothing;
  • With improper mode of washing and temperature changes, the fabric loses its strength, it can be deformed;
  • gradually accumulates static electricity.

Benefits of fabric made with a blend of natural and synthetic fibers:

  • Does not deform with temperature changes.
  • More resistant to fading and exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
  • Breathes well, has good air permeability and hygroscopicity.
  • Drapes well.

The drawbacks are also readily apparent: because blended fabric is slightly weaker than synthetic materials, it wrinkles more easily and loses its shape more quickly.

Fabric care

Barbie or Marciano are regarded as fairly meticulous fabrics to maintain. However, the task can be completed if certain guidelines and suggestions are followed.

Washing and drying

  1. You can wash on a delicate cycle without spinning in a washing machine or by hand. In the second case, do not wring or twist the products too much.
  2. Water temperature – 30-40 degrees. Higher temperatures and active washing with spinning can lead to deformation.
  3. It is advisable to wash with liquid gels. Do not use products with an aggressive composition and bleaching agents.
  4. Dry clothes flat out away from heating appliances. And not in the sun.
  5. Clothes decorated with stones, lace, or embroidery are recommended to be dry cleaned.
  6. Store dresses and other clothes on hangers or in special cases.

How to iron

Straight through the gauze, iron dresses and suits from the inside out. The fabric can be harmed by ironing on the front side at temperatures higher than 150 degrees without having any chance of recovery or restoration.

Barbie fabric is distinguished by its unique combination of style and functionality. It’s understandable why this material has grown in popularity in the fashion industry given its smooth, soft texture and adaptable composition.

Barbie fabric has the ideal ratio of drape to durability, making it ideal for both dressmaking and casual tops. It’s a terrific option for both novice and expert sewers because it’s simple to use.

Barbie fabric has special qualities that make it able to hold detailed designs and vivid colors beautifully. This makes it the best option for anyone wishing to make fashionable, durable clothing.
