Patchwork bedspread – painstaking beauty with your own hands!

Making a patchwork bedspread is a great way to add character and personality to your house. With a little imagination and leftover fabric, you can create something incredibly unique. The process of piecing together various patterns and colors can be immensely satisfying, regardless of experience level.

Because different fabrics are used to tell different stories, each patchwork bedspread is unique. The entire process, from selecting fabrics to cutting and sewing, is an example of patience and artistic ability. Simple fabric squares can be turned into a stunning and useful piece of art with a little effort and attention to detail.

We’ll discuss the benefits and methods of creating a patchwork bedspread in this article. You’ll discover how this age-old craft can give your bedroom decor a unique touch, as well as ideas and advice to get you started on your own project.

Patchwork bedspread from squares with your own hands

To sew, you’ll need:

  • squares of cotton fabrics, different colors, 25 cm by 25 cm – 20 pcs.;
  • padding or fleece – 105 cm by 130 cm;
  • fabric for the back side – 105 cm by 130 cm;
  • threads, sewing tool.

How to sew a blanket

To create a patchwork blanket by hand, cut out the necessary number of square flaps.

Next, arrange the squares four by five, combining them according to color.

Let’s begin by creating horizontal stripes with our hands as we sew a blanket made of multicolored patches. Fold the squares in pairs so that the right sides are facing one another to accomplish this. The squares on the opposite side of the stack must be sewn after we have finished sewing the sides of each pair on the right side.

Sew the completed strips to continue the patchwork embroidery. Sew a single, shared piece from them. This is how to put together a patchwork blanket: fold the strips right sides facing each other, pin them, and make sure the lines of the transverse stitching seams coincide.

Sew the strips together to form a shared cloth.

Press every seam.

Using the sealant, cut a rectangle the same size as the patchwork. After applying sealant to a level, horizontal surface, place the patchwork piece, right side up, on top.

Cut out the blank for the bedspread’s bottom and lay it, right side down, over the sections of sealant that have been laid out. After pinning the three-layer "sandwich," sew, leaving a space open.

Turn and cut the excess allowance.

Iron the product after carefully straightening the seams, paying close attention to the corners. Tuck the allowances in the open area inward at the same time. Although you can sew it by hand using blind stitches, sew up the exposed area using a sewing machine.

The blanket comes out thick and toasty. Because patchwork bedspreads have multiple layers, it is advised to quilt every one of them. Let’s use a basic, everyday stitch for this. We stitch the patches together along their seams.

The large bedspread is prepared!

A rewarding project that blends creativity and craftsmanship is making a patchwork bedspread. You can create a distinctive and lovely bedspread that gives a personal touch to any bedroom by carefully choosing and piecing together various fabric pieces. Because of the endless customization options provided by this hands-on method, every patchwork bedspread is unique and represents your own taste and labor of love.

DIY patchwork bedspread

What you’ll need to sew a patchwork bedspread is:

  • multicolored patches 6.25 cm by 11.25 cm – 160 pcs.;
  • two pieces of plain fabric (light and dark) – 120 cm;
  • fabric for the border – 45 cm;
  • batting or other insulation 1.3 m by 1.4 m;
  • fabric for lining – 1.3 m by 1.4 m;
  • threads, sewing tool.

Step-by-step sewing instructions and a photo master class

Using your hands, cut nine 6.25 cm wide stripes out of light plain fabric to make blankets out of multicolored flaps. Next, we cut each strip into 11.25-cm-long shreds. Eighty light flaps in total are required.

Using a comparable technology, we cut 80 flaps that measure 6.25 cm by 11.25 cm out of dark fabric.

Collect 5 5.6 cm stripes for the border.

We grind them on the long sides after folding them in pairs with the front sides facing each other, printed, and plainly shredded. Since the suture allowances will take up a portion of the double width, we receive square blanks measuring 11.25 cm by 11.25 cm.

The blanks are arranged so that their seams are perpendicular to one another.

We alternate two blanks with a light border and two blanks with a dark border to create a patchwork mosaic strip. Every strip needs to be folded into 12 squares.

After combining the leftovers for the second strip, we position the first square so that its stitching seam is perpendicular to the first square’s (cm. photo) stitching seam.

A complete patchwork blanket consisting of thirteen strips, each with twelve squares.

Use batting lining to create a beautiful and warm patchwork blanket.

The lining should be placed on the floor wrong side up, followed by the insulation and the patchwork piece with the right side facing up. Attach three layers.

Quickly make any kind of stitch on the bedspread.

Sew 5.6 cm wide strips into a single piece for the border, then press the seams closed. Iron the border in half, folding the wrong side inside. Next, iron after folding the cuts on both sides to the center.

Align the bedspread’s cuts, trimming away any extra insulation and uneven patches. Apply a border to the bedspread’s entire perimeter.

The final product measures 125 x 125 cm.

What you should get ready:

  • dark fabric with a small print, for a width of 1.1 m you need to take 0.5 m;
  • light plain fabric, for a width of 1.1 m you need to take 0.5 m;
  • fabric that matches the previous ones in color, with a polka dot pattern, for a width of 1.1 m you need to take 0.7 m;
  • fabric that matches the color of the bottom of the blanket;
  • fabric for bias binding or ready-made binding;
  • filler;
  • threads, sewing tool.

How to sew a patchwork quilt

We piece together a patchwork quilt using square blocks that are pieced together from square and rectangular pieces.

We’ll piece together patchwork pieces using the Irish square design as a guide. It is useful and adaptable, and it can be quickly adjusted to fit the blanket’s exact measurements. Square chains can be single, double, or triple chains. It is up to you to decide. Appliques or embroidery look fantastic on open spaces.

The Irish square composition blends well with other patchwork technique types and is simple to use. This is the best choice for novice masters.

With a blanket like this, a duvet is unnecessary because it doubles as a bedspread.

The photo letters indicate which ones are commonly used for convenient fabric cutting.

Cut the strips wide using one of the four types of fabric:

  • plain (c) – eight stripes 16.5 cm by 27 cm;
  • in peas (c) – five stripes 16.5 cm by 27 cm;
  • The rest of the fabric – cut into strips 6 cm wide.

Every block has a side measuring 20 centimeters. It comes with five five-centimeter-wide square strips. You must increase the seam allowance to this size. Enough room exists for a scenting paw to be used with 7-8 mm of side clearance. As a result, the square workpiece’s side measures 6.5 cm.

The strips are sewn in the following order: with – a – c – a – with.

Next, cut a 6.5 cm wide strip from a wider strip.

In order to create a checkerboard pattern with the dark squares, sew the cut stripes together.

We have twelve identical square blocks to prepare.

Square blocks of the second kind are made from fabrics A and B. Cut one 15 cm by 25 cm rectangle and two 5 cm by 15 cm rectangles from the fabric. We cut four 5-centimeter-square squares from fabric A. Additionally, remember to include seam allowances of 7-8 mm. Sew the squares according to the picture.

Eight identical blocks should be sewn from fabrics B and C.

Using fabrics A and B, we create four more blocks in nearly the same manner as before, but we only add dark squares to three of the element’s corners.

Using the picture as a guide, we put the bedspread’s upper portion together from the prepared square blocks. The horizontal stripes are sewn together first, followed by the vertical stripes.

How to do embroidery

Two straight stitch patterns are used in this master class. These designs work best when embroidered using the trapunto method. This embroidery is three-dimensional and calls for specific abilities. It is best for needlewomen who have never worked with this kind of needlework to familiarize themselves with it beforehand.

In addition to the patchwork fabric that has been sewn, we will also require a tear-off non-adhesive stabilizer and a sealant to finish the project.

The center point of each square block that will be embroidered is located. We put a coat of glue on the tear-off non-adhesive stabilizer after inserting it into the hoop. There’s no need to use a layer of glue if your lining layer is fleece-backed fabric.

The square patchwork block is positioned on top of the stabilizer after the lining material is adhered to it with glue. It’s crucial to align the embroidery area with the hoop’s center.

Use pins to secure the patchwork square. Embroider the chosen piece. We continue to embroider the remaining patchwork blocks in the same manner.

Assembly

Trim the filler carefully, leaving 5 mm between each cut and the embroidered pieces. Use pins to secure the blanket’s layers together. We use a walking foot to sew the blanket diagonally and around the edges.

Free motion stitch

Using a free-running stitch, squares featuring central pieces of fabric B are quilted to create a "brains" pattern. Additionally, you can hand stitch 5 mm away from the embroidery to follow its contour. Utilize microstitching to give your embroidery more volume.

Processing the edges of the bedspread

We prepare the bias tape and either manually or mechanically process the product’s edge.
