Features of bologna fabric: properties and characteristics of the material

Bologna fabric is renowned for being both useful and adaptable. This fabric, which was first created in Italy, has become well-known for its robust and water-resistant qualities, making it a preferred choice for outdoor apparel and accessories.

Bologna fabric’s resilience to inclement weather while maintaining its comfort and light weight is one of its best qualities. Because of its dependable resistance to wind and rain, it is frequently used in the creation of jackets, raincoats, and bags.

Bologna fabric is appreciated not only for its practical qualities but also for its ease of maintenance. Its stain resistance and ease of cleaning make it more appealing for daily use. By being aware of these qualities, you can maximize the use of this material in your wardrobe.

A little history

The fabric’s Italian name originated there. Bologna was the location of its original creation. It’s now referred to as bologna fabric, not bologna. They made light raincoats out of it, which provided great weather protection. It was dark, mostly brown or black, with hints of gray sporadically.

There were large belts around the waist of these raincoats. When Italian films gained popularity in the late 1950s of the previous century, they started to become increasingly popular. However, stylish raincoats in the USSR also came with scarves, boots, and umbrellas. Russia had access to the technology back in the Soviet era, specifically in the 1960s. German inventions of nylon fibers were used to make Bologna cloth. As a result, the bologna made at home turned out to be coarser than the Italian version. Bologna production started in the USSR at the Naro-Fominsk silk factory.

Customers liked the content in the nation right away. It was used to make affordable, waterproof, and warm clothing. Thus, bologna started to be used to make jackets and raincoats.

Bologna fabric is a popular option for outerwear, bags, and protective gear because it is a strong, water-resistant material that is also known for its usefulness and versatility. It is perfect for a variety of weather conditions because it is lightweight, easy to clean, and provides good protection against wind and rain. The fabric is a dependable choice for both fashionable and practical clothing because of its distinctive qualities, which include its smooth texture and capacity to hold warmth.

Manufacturing and production

  • Acate ether is applied to the surface, which ensures the water resistance of the material.
  • A second layer of ether is applied on top, but not as viscous.
  • The third layer is metallic powder. Thanks to it, bologna fabric gets its shine.
  • The fabric is treated with silicone. Now bologna is a waterproof and durable fabric.

  • The first layer is also intended for waterproofing. Polyacrylates are applied.
  • The second layer is the same, but less viscous.
  • Silicone treatment.

The first method’s Bologna appears more attractive than the second method’s fabric. The first fabric costs more than the second, so the prices are reasonable.

Characteristics, pros and cons, description

Bologna is a fabric composed of capron or nylon, as was previously mentioned. It rustles when rubbed and is incredibly dense, smooth, and shiny. It is impermeable to moisture and air. Bologna fabric is resistant to bacteria, acids, alkalis, and dirt in addition to being waterproof.

Matter is incredibly light and does not cause discomfort to wear despite its density. Even cotton apparel will weigh a lot more than lapdog gear. The fabric is robust. Only if the garment catches on a nail or other sharp object will it tear.

The fabric is not frightened of acids or alkalis, but it corrodes when exposed to organic solvents. It only takes one drop to eat through the fabric to leave nylon behind.

  • Because of its density, the fabric is vapor-impermeable. The body does not breathe at all in lapdog clothing. In warm weather, this will have a bad effect on the skin.
  • The fabric is not waterproof forever. When exposed to sunlight, the material loses this property.
  • It is better to wear such clothing in mild cold. Frost causes the fabric to crack, wrinkle and break.
  • Due to intolerance to organic solvents, dry cleaning is prohibited.

  • high strength;
  • protects from cold and rain;
  • light weight;
  • low price;
  • compact, lapdog is easy to fold, it does not wrinkle.

The fabric appeals to customers because of its unique benefits. And if you treat the fabric well, all of its flaws are not that bad.

Application areas of bologna fabric

Throughout the USSR, this material was mostly used to make coats, jackets, and raincoats. At the time, since the bologna had just arrived from Italy, they were very in style. They are still being sewn, of course. Bologna started to be used to make a wide range of other items besides jackets and raincoats.

Application for the production of uniforms

  • In sewing jackets. The classic version of the material is suitable for this. The jacket will protect from cold, wind and rain.
  • In sewing trousers, vests, raincoats, parkas.
  • In the manufacture of umbrellas. Since the bologna does not allow moisture to pass through, umbrellas are made from it.
  • In the production of bags and backpacks.
  • In the production of shoes.
  • In sewing curtains, finishing tablecloths.

How to choose a bologna thing

There are multiple criteria on the fabric that you can select from. This is atmospheric activity (water evaporation) and water resistance. If the garments are poorly constructed or the fabric was produced incorrectly, there will be insufficient water resistance. Comfortable clothing is essential, particularly for uniforms. It shouldn’t be overly thick, uncomfortable, or restrict movement. Occasionally, the uniform can have a reflective sign applied to it.

Caring for things made of lapdog

No special care for the fabric is required. You just need to protect it from severe frost and heat, direct sunlight and chemical exposure. You should wear these clothes not in cold weather, but in cool, damp weather. Since chemicals cannot be used when washing, lapdog items do not necessarily need to be washed in a washing machine. It does not require this. If dirty, it is usually enough to simply wipe the fabric with a damp cloth. The water can be soapy, depending on the degree of contamination. Remove dust and dirt without pressing hard on the material. Unlined items are washed in cool water, using soap or another neutral detergent. Items should be dried at low temperatures, and the water should drain completely.

An item of bologna should be rinsed in water containing dissolved vinegar if its color has faded over time. The item will appear newer and the color will be brighter as a result.

How much do bologna items cost

Bologna material is inexpensive because it is easy to produce. An item of bologna costs, on average, 150 rubles. Fabric costs approximately 300 rubles per meter. The type of item determines the price, whether it’s a full suit, a jacket alone, or something for a child or an adult. The cost of a uniform is higher than that of regular clothing.

Naturally, the material has flaws and requires special handling during storage. Should you purchase anything made of this material? Yes, of course. You should have at least one bologna raincoat in your closet. This is the best during typical rainy weather. Additionally essential for travelers is fabric. Travelers will find lapdog backpacks especially helpful. However, purchasing winter clothing is not worthwhile, particularly if the weather is chilly. This will degrade the clothing and negatively impact the skin. Investing a little extra cash on clothing made of a different, breathable material is preferable.
